Kids Right size guide

Shopping for children is no easy feat. When it comes to finding the right sizes to purchase in baby clothes, toddler clothes and kid clothes, things can get tricky. Some children grow through sizes quickly, while others take their time moving from one size to the next. Plus, it can be difficult understanding the variations in sizing. You might be wondering, What’s the difference between 6 and 6X? What size is 6T? We’re breaking it down below:

Keep in mind that kids’ clothing sizes often vary

First, and most importantly, all children’s clothing should fit snugly without being too tight. For reference, you can use our Carter’s® size charts to help you choose the right size for a comfortable fit.  As your child grows, it’s likely they will wear different sizes in different types of clothing. For example, their shirt size might be a 6, while their pants size is a 5T. See our toddler sizing chart for each garment to determine the proper fit for tops and bottoms separately.

Understand how to read clothing labels

Wondering what the numbers and letters on a kid’s clothing label mean? Before shopping, it’s important to know how to read the label. Here is a quick guide to reading Carter’s clothing labels.

P = Preemie

NB = Newborn

3M = 0 to 3 months (“M” is used up to 24M)

2T = Toddler, approximately 2 years old (“T” is used up to 5T)

6X = A size between 6 and 7

4R = Size 4, regular fit

4S = Size 4, slim fit

4H = Size 4, husky fit

4P = Size 4, plus fit

4-5 = Dual sizes, such as 4-5, are sized generously, with room to grow

Remember that clothing labels don’t always match up with the child’s age

Although baby and kid clothes are often sized by age (newborn, 6-9 months, 2T, etc.), these size labels should simply be used as a starting point. Children grow at different rates, and each child’s growth is unique, so keep in mind you may need to purchase a size that doesn’t match the child’s age.

Use your baby’s weight to determine baby clothes sizing

Regardless of the age listed on the tag, baby clothing sizes are typically based on weight and length. For example, Carter’s 6M sizing generally fits babies 12.5 to 17 pounds and 24 to 27 inches long, but as babies come in all shapes and sizes, not all 6-month-olds will be in this range. Look to your infant rather than the number printed inside the clothing to find the best fit and check out Carter’s baby clothing sizing chart to determine which size is best for your little one.

No need to break out the measuring tape each time you go shopping. Using your baby’s weight and age range will likely do the job. Remember: While baby clothing should be snug, if there are indentations on baby’s skin after wearing clothes or zippers become difficult to pull up, it’s time to size up.

Familiarize yourself with the quirks of children’s clothing sizes.

Have you ever wondered why baby clothes go up to 24M and toddler clothes start at 2T, with both sizes representing 2 years old? There is a reason for this, as there is actually a difference between 24 months and 2T.

Kids’ growth can slow down when they hit the toddler stage, but toddlers do come in all sizes. Some 2-year-olds may also be potty trained and therefore may not need extra room in their clothes to fit over a diaper. For toddler clothing sizing, 24M items might be designed to accommodate a child’s diaper, while 2T items are for a child who may no longer be wearing diapers.

You may also notice that Carter’s baby clothes are labeled with a single size instead of a size range (for example, 3M instead of 0-3M). Carter’s clothing that is labeled 3M typically compares to the 0-3M range in other brands.

Kids grow up fast; just when you think you’ve gotten a handle on their current size, they’ve grown again and are on to the next size! With our kids’ size chart, Carter’s can help simplify the purchasing process.
