Spooky season always seems to creep up fast, and with it the stress of figuring out your little one’s perfect costume. Here’s the good news: You don’t need a sewing machine, a trip to the craft store or a week of prep to make something sweet (and tasty!) that you’ll remember for years to come. Enter: Your baby dressed as an avocado – and you’re making this costume yourself (in under 30 minutes we should add). This DIY avocado costume is simple, comfy and guaranteed to get a few laughs from trick-or-treaters. Bonus: It all starts with green basics your baby can wear again and again. What you’ll need
- Carter’s long-sleeve green bodysuit or top (or jacket for colder climates)
- Carter’s green pants or joggers (PurelySoft™ outfit sets and Sleep & Play are great options too!)
- Light green cardboard or felt (or any shade you like for the avocado “shell”)
- Brown felt (for the pit)
- Scissors
- Safety pins or fabric glue
- Optional: headband + green cardboard or felt (for leaves)
Step 1: Make the avocado “shell”
1. Cut out a large oval from the light green cardboard or felt – big enough to cover most of your baby’s front. Think of the classic avocado shape, a little wider at the bottom.
2. If you’d like a layered look, cut a slightly larger oval in a darker shade of green to go behind it (totally optional, but it adds depth).
Step 2: Add the pit
1. Cut a medium-sized circle out of the brown felt.
2. Glue or pin it to the middle of your avocado oval.
Step 3: Put it all together
1. Get your baby dressed in their green base layer.
2. Using fabric glue or a couple of safety pins, attach the avocado oval to the front of their shirt. (Pro tip: leave the top and bottom edges a little loose so it moves with them.)
Step 4: Add the details (optional)
1. Cut two or three leaf shapes out of the leftover green paper or felt and attach them to a headband.
2. Pop it on, and suddenly you’ve got the sweetest avocado sprout around.
And that’s all it takes! It’s quick, comfy for your little one, and easy to throw together even if you’re making it the night before Halloween. And after the holiday? The green top and bottoms slide right back into the everyday drawer.
