Katharine Pfeiffer
Former NICU and Mission Impacted Mom
Can you tell us a little bit about your baby's early arrival and NICU journey?
My name’s Katharine Pfeiffer. I’m a March of Dimes mission mom, and I’m a mom of two NICU graduates. Our NICU journey began when my son was born 10 weeks early at 30 weeks, and it was a completely unexpected part of our story but it’s one that our family really cherishes because of the care and expert medical attention we received in the NICU.
Why does having clothing specially made for preemies matter to families like yours?
It is so important to have clothes specifically made for preemies because of all the wires and tubes that go along with having a preemie in the NICU. Carter’s NICU line that has all of these adaptive features is amazing, and I’m so excited for the moms that get to put their babies in these clothes – it will make them feel so special.
What’s something you wish more people knew about premature babies and their families?
One of the best parts of our NICU experience was the relationships we had with the doctors and nurses. We still maintain really great relationships with those who served on our care team in the NICU, and the relationships that we formed with them over those months – that seemed like years at the time – is something I’ll never forget.

Explain why partnerships – like this one—are so important to March of Dimes’ mission.
Every year, March of Dimes serves over 50,000 families across the country through our NICU Family Support® program. Partnerships like the one we have with Carter’s is important because it helps us extend our mission beyond hospital walls and into daily lives of everyday families.
What is the significance of Prematurity Month for March of Dimes?
Prematurity Awareness Month is an incredibility significant time for March of Dimes because it allows us to raise awareness about preterm birth and the life-long implications that come from it.
